"the over-aching aim of my painting is the continued deconstruction of existing methods to forge a new image..."

Regular readers of painters TUBES magazine may remember our earlier issues where we introduced Andrew's work to the wide global audience on the readly.com platform.

Since that time the artist has been busy with developing his unique painting theories and style. Andrew has travelled the world taking up art residencies in a whole bunch of countries. In late Autumn Andrew travelled to China where he was invited to takeup a residency in a variety of art institutions. He will be working there for three months (until January 2024) - In the meantime we are delighted to present examples of the paintings from 2023.

(Note: All Andrew's 2023 work to date is Untitled).

During a residency in Morocco during the autumn of 2022, Andrew observedthe 'desert light' where the immersiveexperience of working on locationpermeates this new series of paintings. The effect of a changing daily pattern oforanges against violet absorbedparticularly around the Ameln valleyclose to the Atlas mountains inspire thisseries made for an exhibition ColourConnections held during summer 2023.

International placements have been akey feature of Andrew's recent practice. He defines working on location andsubsequent reflective work, as creating'scapes' (involving multiple facets of asubject) evolved through both exploratory studies and in theproduction of a definitive portfolio forexhibition.

These new works were all madebetween March and June 2023.

Taking as a point of reference theidea of non-place, Andrew'spainting has evolved through aparallel questioning of objectivity, exploring memory and experience. He uses diffused imagery tointerrogate reality, a denseclustering of line, shape andcolour, intersections, gestures anddirections.Through a desire for a moreflexible and less structured image, his painting has developed to amore expressive idiom withgesture and the dynamicapplication of paint to the fore.I
